Hegar dilators are often used to gently dilate the cervix during gynecological and obstetric procedures. These include outpatient procedures such as insertion of an intrauterine contraceptive device, as well as surgeries such as dilation and curettage, and uterine biopsy. A single-sided dilator consists of a handle on one end and a graduated dilator-like rod on the other.
